The only Hindi film Mahatma Gandhi saw in his lifetime (he saw only parts of it) was Ram Rajya, a movie based on Ramayana epic and directed by Vijay Bhatt. He saw Rama in the Quran, in the Zend Avesta and the Bible. Rama for him was Hormazd of the Parsis and the Christ of Christians. He believed Ramanama cannot restore a person’s limb but can perform the greater miracle of helping him to be at peace in spite of the loss. His nurse Rambha taught him to recite Ramanama to get over the fear from darkness and ghosts. For him, the son of Dasharatha and husband of Sita was his saviour from his childhood to old age. The father of the Indian nation never shied away from admitting the imprint of Tulsidas’ Ramayana and Rama, its protagonist, on his life. For Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi, Truth was God and nobody but Rama best represented the Truth.
